Crowded Teeth and the Timing of Orthodontic Treatment

Crowding means the teeth cannot form a neat row in the jaw; they overlap or rotate. It is one of the most common reasons people visit an orthodontist.

What causes crowding?

• A mismatch between tooth size and jaw size
• Early loss of baby teeth, leaving less space for permanent teeth
• Habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting or mouth breathing
• Hereditary factors

Why should it be treated?

Crowded teeth are not only an aesthetic concern. Overlapping teeth are hard to clean, which can increase the risk of decay and gum disease. In some cases chewing function and tooth wear are also affected.

When to have an orthodontic check-up

International orthodontic organisations recommend a child’s first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. Not every child needs treatment at this age, but assessing jaw growth and the eruption pattern early helps spot potential problems in advance.

Treatment timing

• Early phase (about 7–10 years): Interventions can guide jaw growth or prevent space problems.
• Adolescence (about 11–14 years): Most permanent teeth have erupted, so comprehensive orthodontic treatment is often carried out at this stage.
• Adulthood: There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. Adults with healthy teeth and gums can also be treated.

Treatment options

Depending on the case, fixed braces (metal or aesthetic ceramic) or clear aligners can be used. Retainers are important to maintain the result after treatment.
