The good news is that in most cases the source is inside the mouth and can be controlled with proper care.<\/p>\n<h2>Common causes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bacteria on the tongue:<\/strong> The bacterial coating at the back of the tongue is the most common source.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poor oral hygiene:<\/strong> Food debris and plaque between the teeth cause odour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gum disease and tooth decay<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dry mouth:<\/strong> Saliva naturally cleans the mouth; drinking too little water, mouth breathing and some medications can cause dry mouth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smoking and certain foods:<\/strong> Foods such as garlic and onion cause temporary odour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dentures and appliances that are not cleaned<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Causes outside the mouth<\/h2>\n<p>Less often, sinusitis, tonsil problems, reflux or some general health conditions can cause bad breath.
