Yet when treated early, it can largely be brought under control.<\/p>\n<h2>How does gum disease start?<\/h2>\n<p>If the bacterial plaque that builds up on teeth is not cleaned regularly, it causes inflammation of the gums. This first stage is called <strong>gingivitis<\/strong>. Over time the plaque hardens into tartar, which is harder to remove.<\/p>\n<h2>Signs<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bleeding when brushing or flossing<\/li>\n<li>Red, swollen and tender gums<\/li>\n<li>Persistent bad breath<\/li>\n<li>Receding gums, teeth looking longer<\/li>\n<li>Loose teeth in advanced cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What happens if it is not treated?<\/h2>\n<p>Untreated gingivitis can progress to <strong>periodontitis<\/strong>.
